Workshop Motivation: A common and reasonable concern about solar geoengineering is the chance of low-probability high-consequence harmful outcomes. Some of these concerns relate to socio-political uncertainties such as reduced effort to cut emissions; others relate to physical science uncertainties. This meeting will catalog physical science mechanisms that might produce high-consequence harmful outcomes for a set of possible stratospheric aerosol deployment scenarios.
Workshop Objectives: This workshop will identify unanticipated, uncertain, or low-probability-high-impact consequences of stratospheric aerosol geoengineering that are within the domain of climate and environmental science. We will look for quantitative lower and upper limits on these consequences, and we will identify paths to reduce uncertainty about these consequences.
